Timbuktu sits on the southern edge of the Sahara, 8 miles (13km) north of the Niger River, an ancient outpost of African wealth, trade and knowledge. A centre of learning which fostered the beginnings of science, culture, religion, astronomy, mathematics. 100 Years to Go draws on the true history of an extraordinary era beginning in 1491 and ending with the fall of the Empire in 1591. Centered on two powerful families, the series will encompass fictionalised storylines and characters, while rooted in recorded history.
We embark on a journey which will capture the imagination of diverse global audiences; traversing the dark side of human nature but also exploring the rich frailty and humour of being human. The series is an exploration of authentic historical dynamics against contemporary questions; between modern and traditional beliefs, faith, political structures and the passage of time. A blend of political intrigue, social melodrama and familial betrayal - with a magical undercurrent - will bring to life a multi layered world yet unseen on television; a world exploring the epic themes of love and its power to endure across time and space.
